Road Trip - Darwin to Alice Springs

Nous voila déjà au mois d’octobre, donc il est venu le temps de repartir à la découverte de cet immense pays… Jeudi 8, préparation du paquetage pour partir 9 jours en road trip pour faire la route de Darwin à Alice Springs !! Rendez-vous à 7H30 chez Thibault pour vérifier l’ensemble du matériel nécessaire pour camper. Ensuite, petit diner avec bières et nous attendons 23H30 pour prendre un taxi direction l’aéroport de Melbourne. Notre vol était prévu à 1H30 donc nous sommes large c’est bon… enfin, peut-être qu’il nous fallait bien ca car tout juste le temps de prendre un verre que Vincent reçoit un appel pour le moins étrange… un anglais l’appel sur son portable français donc il raccroche ! Mais il rappel encore et comprend en fait que c’est l’aéroport qu’il lui demande de venir vérifier son bagage en soute. Et oui, nous avions mis un bagage en soute pour le nécessaire de camping. Donc me voila parti avec Vincent à la recherche du bureau où nous attends un contrôleur… en chemin nous entendons : "M. Vincent Breheret est attendu à la porte d’embarquement …" oups avons-nous oublié la bouteille de gaz dans le cocker ? … Bref nous y voila, le gars nous montre l’impression infra rouge et ce n’est pas le cocker ; alors quoi alors… on ne sait pas donc on démonte le sac et en faite, c’était la lampe de poche ! Incroyable. L’heure arrivée, nous montons dans l’avion et la surprise, les sièges ne sont pas inclinables !! Zut, il va falloir dormir comme cela !

Here we go, we are in the month of October; so it’s time to go again to discover this vast country… Thursday, 8th preparation of my luggage in order to do a 9 days road trip from Darwin to Alice Springs!! We met us at 7:30 pm in Thibault’s house in order to check all our packages to camp. Then, small diner with beers and we waited 11:30pm to get on a cab to the airport of Melbourne. Our flight was expected at 1:30 am so we had enough time to take another beer. Finally, maybe it was the good time because Vincent received a weird call… An English person walled him to his French phone so he hung up the phone! But the man called again and this time he took the time to reply and it was a controller working at the airport telling him that it was a problem with a our luggage. We took a luggage with the bottom of the plane in order to carry all the stuff that we need to camp. So I was going to meet this guy with Vincent and during the walk we eared: “M. Vincent Breheret is expected at the gate…”Oh dear what’s going on?!? Maybe we let a bottle of gas in the cocker? So, once there, the guy showed to us the scan’s print of our bag but it wasn’t the cocker … We unmade the bad and finally it was our flash light! Unbelievable! Nothing matter. The time is gone, we got on the plane and surprise… the seats could not be tilt, damn it! That will be more difficult to sleep.

Arrivé à Darwin 4H30 heure locale (1H30 de décalage avec Melbourne). On prend la voiture de location et là surprise… un Hyundai Getz est à nous ! Je l’avais loué avec ma carte de fidélité que j’ai obtenue avec mon stage aux US et normalement je dois être upgradé et le gars me dit que j’y suis !! Stupéfiant, une toute petite voiture genre 106 mais je suis surclassé car j’ai 4 portes ! Bon aller c’est partit…

We arrived in Melbourne at 4:30 am on Friday, local time (1:30 flight time difference between Darwin and Melbourne). We took a rent car that I was reserved with my membership card in National that I got from the US; and normally I have to be up-graduated … I was but it was a 5-doors car instead of a 3-doors car! Waouh there is a huge difference between the understanding of the word “up-graduated” for an American and an Australian! Anyway, it was a Hyundai Getz, a king of mini cooper if I want to compare with an American car but just a little bit bigger as well.

Direction le centre ville de Darwin pour prendre un petit déj, faire les courses mais il a fallu attendre que ca ouvre à 8H ! Ensuite nous voila fin prêt et direction Kakadu National Parc à 3H de Darwin.

Then, go to the downtown of Darwin to have a breakfast, do shopping but we had to wait because of the open time for the store is at 8am! Afterthat, go to Kakadu National Park which is to 3 hours drive from Darwin.

Premier arrêt pour voir un immense lac avec plein de canards et oiseaux en tout genre… mais qu’est-ce qu’il fait chaud comparer à Melbourne ! Ici en moyenne 35°C !

Une fois au parc, nous nous dirigeons vers le visitor center ou nous nous renseignons des choses à voir et on nous dit qu’à 1H21 précise dans un endroit du parc, les crocos mangent ! Donc on y va tout content et on faite, on a bien vus des crocodiles mais rien de plus ! Dommage.

Once in the Park, we went to the visitor center to have some advises on what we could do. And the woman told us that at 1:21 “precisely”, it marks on the paperJ; the crocodiles eat in a specific place on the river! So we drove there, all of us so exciting but finally, we saw just the crocodile swim and nothing else. Damage!

Ensuite, petites balades de 1 à 3 km le long de la rivière ou l’on a pu voir pleins d’arbres remplis de chauve-souris énorme ! Ensuite direction Ubirr ou nous avons admiré le coucher de soleil.

Next, small walks, 1 and 3 km along the river where we saw a lot of bats in the trees! Unbelievable! They are so big. Afterward, we went to Ubirr in order to enjoy the sunset.

Puis, direction un camping ou nous avons fait un feu de camp et dormis sous ces belles étoiles !

Then, We went to a camping where we did a fire camp and sleep under all these beautiful stars! Believe me, it is not the same in the south hemisphere.

Samedi, on commence par notre première et dernière douche du road trip ! Et oui, c’était un camping pour touriste. Puis ballade dans le parc ou nous avons vu pleins de peintures Aborigènes puis soudain une pancarte : marche de 12km 6-8 heures. On s’avance et on se dit qu’il doit une belle vu vue d’en haut ! On avance on avance, toujours 35°C et on à que 2 litres d’eau. Bref en fin de compte, nous l’avons faite en 3H30 mais on était bien content d’arrivé !

Saturday, we started by our first and last shower of the trip! Yes, it was a tourist’s camp. After that, walk in the park where we saw a lot of Aborigine’s drawing on the rocks. And suddenly, a sign shows to us a 12km walk 6-8 hours. We thought a lot and decided to do it even if we had only two litters of water. Finally, we did it in 3:30hours but we were happy to arrive to the car!

Puis direction Jabiru ou nous avons mangé, petite marche de 2 km et nous avons regardé le coucher de soleil sur la Yellow River avec les crocodiles ! Très jolie.

Afterward, we went to Jabiru where we had lunch, small walk of 2 km and we saw the sunset on the Yellow river with the crocodile! So nice.

Enfin, direction un camping au milieu d’une piste pour établir notre campement. Sans oublier quelques frein a main !!

Next, we went to a camping in the middle of a track to establish our camp. Without forgotten some handbrakes !!

Dimanche, lever à l’aurore à Gunlom falls. Direction les chutes d’eau ou la surprise, personnes ! Nous nous préparons à plongé quand nous voyons le garde du parc qui nous dit qu’on peut même la boire. Ensuite, nous avons sauté du haut de la falaise… 5 mètres environ! Somptueux. Nous avons aussi vu un énorme lézard dans cette rivière, un peu assécher quand même. Normal, on est à la fin de la saison sèche.

Sunday, we stood up at the aurora in Gunlom Falls. We went to the falls and surprise, nobody there! Only the Ranger and he told to us that we can drink the water. Then, we jumped from the top of the rock… 5 meters roughly! Sumptuous. We equally saw a big lizard in the river, but the river was a little bit drain because of the end of dry season.

Ensuite direction Pine Creek, la fin du Parc et aussi Litchfield Park, un autre parc. Les deux sont cote à cote. Sur la route, nous avons vus un sanglier qui était le long de la rivière et aussi un Dingo qui se promenait sur la piste. Nous nous aussi sommes arrêtés pour voir les termitières géante et même des termitières magnétiques qui sont plates et orientés du Nord au Sud. On a aussi vu du feu de bush. Le rangers mettent le feu pour régénérer la forêt plus rapidement.

Then, we went to Pine Creek, the end of the park and we pass through the Litchfield National Park too. All of them are close. On the road, we saw a boar along the river and a Dingo walking on the track! We stopped the car on the way in order to see the big termitary or even magnetic termitary which is oriented North-South. We also saw bush fires. They rangers burn the bush in order to regenerate the forest.

Puis, nous nous arrêtons à Florence Falls ou nous faisons une petite marche de 1 km et un plongeon. Puis, direction une autre chute d’eau, Wangi Falls ou nous replongeons ! Il y avait même un jacuzzi dans la roche.

After that, we stop us in Florence Falls where we did a small walk 1km and jumped. Then, we went to another falls, the Wangi Falls where we swam again! It was even a Jacuzzi there in the rock! Nice

Puis retour à Darwin car nous devons rendre la voiture avant 4H30 du matin. Ha problème, la voiture que nous allons prendre après avec relocation, nous ne pouvons l’avoir qu’a 10H ! Donc nous avons commencé par un petit resto ou nous avons pris du croco et le poisson local, du Bacamumdi. Poisson super mais le croco, ils le servent panné, donc pas terrible ! Ensuite, direction l’aéroport ou nous avons passé la nuit.

Afterward, we came back to Darwin because we had to give back the car before 4:30 am. Oups, little problem, we needed to wait until 10 am to get the other car from relocation. So we started by have diner in a restaurant and we ate crocodile and the local fish: Bacamumdi. Great fish but the crocodile was so so because they breaded it. Then, we slept at the airport.

Alors, lundi nous prenons la voiture de relocation. Il s’agit en faite d’une compagnie qui propose pour un prix très bas, de louer la voiture pour la descendre d’une ville à une autre. Par exemple, si vous démanger de Darwin à Alice Springs, et que vous ne pouvez pas descendre votre voiture, et bien vous la mettez chez cette compagnie. Donc nous avons eu une 4x4 énorme pour seulement 5 dollars par jour ! Et en plus nous avions un frigo ! Donc on la rempli de bière et de saucisses. Puis direction Litchifield Park de nouveau après une longue recherche de chapeau sur Darwin peu fluctuante.

Next, Monday we took the relocation’s car. It was a big 4x4. In fact, it is a company which offers to rent a car for only 5 dollars per day and in exchange, you have to drive from a town to another town. For example, you have to move and you can’t drive your car so you put it in this company to bring it to you back. But this time we got a fridge!! So we filled it with beers and sausages!! Great. Then, we went to Litchfield Park again after a long research slightly fluctuating of crocodile’s hat.

On passe par Lost city ou une très belle piste de 4x4 nous attend ! Je peux vous dire qu’on sait fait plaisir ! Puis on s’arrête à une chute d’eau pour un petit bain mais je crois que nous avons dérangé un couple pour ce coucher de soleil… Puis direction un camping de nuit toujours sur la piste de 4x4 ou nous avons même du traversé une rivière ! Génial. Enfin, nous étions totalement seuls au camping, donc feu de camp, nous faisons cuire les saucisses avec des bâtons, et dodo à la belle étoile. Vincent et Thibault on même dormit sur le 4x4.

We passed by Lost City where an amazing 4 wheels track is waiting for us! I can say to you that we had a lot of fun! Then, we stopped the car front of another falls with a swim but I believe that we disturbed a couple for this beautiful sunset in the falls… Sorry. Next, we went to a camping where we were totally alone so we did a camp fire and we cocked the sausages with a branch; then we slept under the stars!

Mardi, nous avons pratiquement fait que de la voiture. Et oui 1450 km sépare Darwin de Alice Springs et nous avons que 2 jours et demi. Route toute droite…. Nous croisons d’énorme Road Train, c’est camions qui tirent jusqu’à 4 remorques !

Tuesday, we had practically driven during the entire day. We have 1450 km between Darwin to Alice Springs to do in only two and a half days. Road almost straight… We crossed a huge road train, big trucks which pull until four trailers!

Arrêt à Daly water… c’est un bar complètement ouff ! Tout le monde qui s’y arrête laisse en général un petit quelque chose car se fut l’un des premiers bars créer dans la région ; et donc il y a plein de chose en tout genre comme des strings, des cartes d’identité, des billets… Bref, nous y avons bu une bière pour marquer le coup !

We stopped at Daly Water… a bar completely amazing! A lot of people let something because it is one of the first bar created in the Northern Territory. So we can find a lot of underwear, cards … Anyway, we drank a beer to print it in our mind.

Puis stop sur une aire de repos pour passer la nuit et re-dodo sur le toit sous ce magnifique ciel étoilés !

Then, we stopped in a rest area on the road to sleep.

Mercredi, toujours voiture car il faut rendre la voiture avant 15H. Arrêt à Devils Marbres, une étrange place ou il y a plein de rochers en marbre tout ronds ! Très beaux.
Puis, arrêt aux Thermals Pools, des piscines naturelles avec des eaux thermals. La première n’était pas trop naturelle car les bords de la piscine étaient bétonnés mais nous avons eu le privilège de se baigner sous les arbres remplis de ces énormes chauves-souris ! Puis dans la deuxième, il s’agissait plus d’une rivière. Petit bain quand même mais l’eau ne sentait pas bon du tout car elle était un peu basse !

Wednesday, we drove again because we had to get back the car before 3pm. But we stopped in Devil’s Marbles; it’s a place with a lot of big round marble rocks in the middle of nowhere. So niceAfterward, we stopped in the thermal pools. The first one was not really natural because the edges of the pool were concreted. But the funniest part is that we swan under the bats! Then, the second pool was much more like a river but it was really nice.

Puis sur la route, nous passons le tropique du capricorne donc arrêt pour prendre une photo.

Then, on the road, we passed the tropic of Capricorn so we stopped to take a photo.

Arrivé à Alice Springs, on change de voiture et la de nouveau un "Gay-Gaytz" mais cette fois on n’a pas été surclassé donc ce sera une trois portes.

We arrived in Alice Springs, so we changed the ca and we got another “Gay Gaytz” but this time we were not up graduated!! So only a 3 doors car…

Enfin, tout est rentré et nous nous sommes dirigés vers Uluru. Arrêt à Rainbow Valley pour y passer la nuit. Nous étions encore tous seuls pour cette nuit là, mais ce soir là fut dramatique… Lors de la préparation de notre repas traditionnel, des pâtes… Thibault les a échappées et elles sont tombées par terre donc plus qu’à recommencer !

Finally, all is entered in the car and we drove to Uluru. We stopped the car in the Rainbow Valley to spend the night. And this night was catastrophic... Thibault efcaped the pasta on the floor!! Damn it, we had to did it again...

Jeudi 15 Octobre, lever avec le soleil pour voir les couleurs du lever du soleil sur la Rainbow Valley. Petit tour puis direction Uluru qui est encore à plus de trois heures de route.

Thursday, 15th of October; we woke up with the sun in order to see the colors on the Rainbow Valley. Then we drove until Uluru which is at 3 hours drive.

On commence par Kata Tjuta qui est coté d’Uluru. Marche de 7 km dans cette superbe roche puis direction Uluru. On rencontre un français qui nous dit qu’il la gravit en 2H et que c’était vraiment difficile. On l’a fait en 1H30 ! Tant mieux car le coucher de soleil est tout proche. On se dirige ensuite vers le lieu où voir le coucher de soleil. Et oui, on ne fait ce que l’on veut sur ces terres aborigènes. Donc une fois sur place, surprise on rencontre d ‘autre français mais cette fois de Clermont-Ferrand et en plus ils sont du CUST, l’école juste à coté de l’IFMA ! Mais le plus extraordinaire, c’est qu’ils sont ici pour finir leur projet. Ils travaillent sur une voiture solaire et la course est dans quelques jours et consiste à rouler de Darwin à Adélaïde ! Encore mieux ils avaient une remorque Michelin !
Mais le must, on était le 15 octobre donc le jour de mon anniversaire, donc mes potes m’ont offert un gâteau en face d’Uluru… la classe !

We started by Kata Tjuta which the rock near Uluru. Walk of 7 km in the beautiful rock; then we went to Uluru. We met a French guy and he said to us that he climbed the rock in 2 hours and it was really difficult! We did it in 1H30! Hopefully, because the sunset is coming… then, we went to the place to see the sunset and my friend gave to me a cake for my birthday! So cool to celebrate my birthday in the middle of the red desert, the Australian’s desert!

A funny thing, we met other French guys; they are working in the school in Clermont-Ferrand just near our school! And they are here for a solar car race between Darwin to Adelaide. And the funniest part, they had a Michelin’s trailer…

Ensuite, on se dirige à Kings Canyon à trois heures de route encore de nuit même que tout le monde le déconseille car trop dangereux ! Il est vrai quand à vu plein de kangourous et même des vaches traverser la route ! Mais si vous y aller doucement, ca va. Donc arrivé à 11H30 dans un camping (que l’on n’a pas payé d’ailleurs) ou l’on a célébrer mon anniv et manger le gâteau d’anniversaire ! Je dois dire que fêter son anniversaire dans le désert Australien… Ca déboite !

Then, we decided to drive during the night and reach Kings Canyon which is after 3 hours driving. All the people here says that it’s crazy to drive during the night because of the kangaroos… and they are right, because we saw almost fifty kangaroos and even two cows crossing the road; but if you drive carefully and slowly, it’s ok. After that, we established our camp and celebrate my birthday.

Vendredi, lever très tôt (5H15) pour voir le lever de soleil sur Kings Canyon. 7km de marche à couper le souffle dans ce canyon. Ensuite pour continuer notre route il nous faut passer sur une piste… il faut acheter un droit de passage et quand on dit que l’on n’a pas de 4x4, on nous dit que l’on ne peut pas y aller car trop dangereux ! Même une canadienne avec un 4x4 ne veut pas la faire car elle dit que c’est trop risqué ! Bref, après réflexion, si on n’y allait pas détour de 600 bornes donc on essaie et on verra bien… En faite ca été ; certes c’est une piste ca secoue mais avec une "Gay gaytz" on passe partout !

Friday, we woke up very early to see the sunrise on Kings Canyon. 7 km walk but it’s really beautiful! Then, we continued the road but we had to pass on a unsealed road… and we have to buy a permit because of the Aborigines. When we bought it, the woman told us that we can’t drive on it with a 2 wheels car because it’s too dangerous! Even an Canadian girl told us the same thing, and she has a 4 wheels car and the doesn’t want to drive on it! Stupid, we did it with our “Gay Gaytz”!!

Le plus drôle ensuite, on rencontre le garde juste à la sortie de la piste et on lui dit que l’on veut aller voir le cratère causé par la météorite… il nous dit que c’est uniquement avec un 4x4 qu’on doit y aller mais il nous a regardé et nous a dit : "vous semblez être fort donc vous devrez peut être poussé la voiture car c’est sableux mais c’est bon aller-y ! " N’importe quoi ! Donc on y va … ca passe mais il faut faire attention car la voiture est basse !

Funnier again, after the road, we saw the ranger and we told to him that we wanted to see the hole meteorite… but he told us that it’s only for a 4 wheels car! He looked us and he said: “You look strong so maybe you will have to push the car but you can go!” That’s funny. Once there, we had lunch and I have to say that we touched a little bit the bottom of the car but nothing matter.

Enfin, nous y sommes arrivés donc on à déjeuner au beau milieu du cratère avant de repartir. On y a même rencontré un gars tout à fait loufoque… il était fan de jean Michelle Jarre.

Puis, on quitte le lieu et on se dirige vers Redbank Gorge. 3 km de marche mais il n’y a pas trop d’eau à cette période de l’année donc ce serait surement plus jolie dans quelque mois… Mais ca vaut déjà le détour ! En plus, on a vu un wallaby avec son bébé.
Puis petite pose bière à Glen Helen et nous nous dirigeons dans un camping nous loin de là mais complètement isolé… trop bien ! On était près des gorges.

Then, we did a break in Glen Helen and drink a beer before to camp.

Samedi, dernier jour. Lever tranquille puis direction Glen Helen de nouveau pour voir la gorge. Puis à Ormidon Gorge, marche de 7 km dans la montagne ou le paysage est magnifique ! Ensuite arrêt à Ocre Pite une autre gorge puis à Simpson Gap, un trou dans la montagne où l’eau passe à travers.

Saturday, last day. We woke up slowly then, we went to Glen Helen and see the Gorge. Then, Ormidon Gorge, another gorge and we walked for 7km in the mountain where the landscape is really beautiful! Afterward, we stopped at Ocre Pite and we saw the three colors of the sand, yellow, orange and red. And finally, we stopped at Simpson Gap to see the gap between the rocks.

Ainsi se termine notre road trip. Mais avant de repartir on mange à Hungry Jacks, soit un burger. On lave ensuite la voiture pour ne pas montrer quand a fait de la piste ! C’était juste 170 km donc pas grand-chose… Ensuite direction l’aéroport après avoir bouclé nos bagages mais la faut faire vite, le check-in se termine dans 1 minute !! Ouf c’est bon.

And that the end of our trip because we came back to Alice Springs and we had lunch in Hungry Jack’s before preparing our luggage. We washed the car too in order to hide the 170 km of unsealed road that we did and we went to the airport. We arrived just in time because the check-in time closed just 1 min after us! Ouf

Arrivé à Melbourne à 21H30 ou il fait 8° et a même plu un peu… GGGGGrrrrrr pourquoi il fait toujours aussi froid à Melbourne ! 35°C était beaucoup mieux !

Then, we arrived in Melbourne at 9:30 pm and the weather was really cold… only 8°C and a little bit of rain! I missed the desert and the hot weather but it was an awesome trip!!
